Today I’ve decided to dive in and discuss my thoughts on supplements. I only want to discuss the basics of this topic; however, because it is very broad and multifaceted. My reasons for this discussion are twofold. One reason is that there is a lot of confusion on the subject these days because of the number of supplements available and the promises that are said to accompany them. The other reason I want to touch on this subject is to clear the air since I am an ambassador with a company that sells supplements.
First, let’s talk about what supplements are. It is a term that most of us are familiar with. It only takes a quick google search or scroll through social media to see a whole slew of supplements on the market with all kinds of promises for improved health. According to Encyclopedia.com, “Nutritional Supplements include vitamins, minerals, herbs, meal supplements, sports nutrition products, and other related products used to boost the nutritional content of the diet.” There are usually claims of quick weight loss, decreases in pain, improved gut health, and so on. Supplements also come in many different forms. From powders that are mixed in smoothies, coffee, or water to gel caps and pills. If it does not come from the foods you eat or drink in your diet, then it is considered a supplement.
Next, let’s tackle the question, “Does everyone need supplements?” The short answer is no. Our bodies were designed in such a way as to metabolize the nutrients from our food sources to fuel and sustain our body processes. That being said, our bodies need PROPER food sources in order to function in the efficient way that it was designed to. This statement from the Dietary Guidelines for Americans shows that many Americans, however, are not getting the proper nutrition. “Federal data show that from the first edition of the Dietary Guidelines for Americans in 1980 through today, Americans have fallen far short of meeting its recommendations, and diet-related chronic disease rates have risen to pervasive levels and continue to be a major public health concern.” Many experts would agree that not only are many of us not consuming the nutrients we need because of food choices, we are also missing out on nutrients because of the way our food is processed. So where it is possible to obtain all the nutrients you need without supplementation, the majority of Americans are missing out on key nutrients that help our bodies function properly.
Now that we understand what supplements are and who may need them, this brings up the question, “How do we navigate this world of supplements?” I have struggled with this myself. The truth of the matter is, that using supplements doesn’t come without risks. Everyone’s body is different and can process things differently than someone else. The supplements that may be right for me, may not be right for you and vice versa. My suggestion for navigating supplements is to research and ask your physician especially if you are on medications or have a chronic disease. It is also important to know that not all supplements are created equal. Supplements do not have to be approved by the FDA, and it is important to know what is in the supplements that you are considering. I would caution against seeking supplements as a quick fix. They should be intended to work alongside your food and lifestyle choices to give the greatest benefit.
In closing, I want to give full disclosure. I mentioned that I am an ambassador with a company that sells supplements. With my role as a health coach you may be asking, “Ok, if I come to her for health coaching, is she going to push her supplements on me?” The short answer again is NO. Like I said above, I believe that everyone’s body is different, and I also understand that not everyone wants to take a supplement. My goal as a health coach is to support you and encourage you along the health journey that you choose. With that being said, I do know that the supplements I promote benefit others, so there may be times during our sessions that I mention a supplement for you to consider if I think it could benefit you. The truth of the matter is, however, whether you take a supplement that I suggest or one that you feel more comfortable with, or not one at all, it will not interfere with my relationship as your health coach. My number 1 priority is to walk with you as you work to meet YOUR goals in the way that best works with your life.
